Guided by the Holy Spirit

Lesson Summary for Oct 23rd, 2011, by Liz Thomey
May 2011 Ensign: President Boyd K. Packer “Guided by the Holy Spirit” Taught by Sister Zupi

President Packer began by telling the story of William Tyndale, who, despite severe persecution, translated the bible from Latin into English. Mr. Tyndale didn’t even marry because he knew he would be persecuted for doing this work. Eventually, he was imprisoned and later burned at the stake for his translation efforts.
President Packer went on to discuss how even though we are commonly called Mormons, we belong to the Church of Jesus Christ and whatever we do, it should be in His name.

Sister Zupi asked how we recognize the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Some of the answered included prayer, trying to listen, scripture study, and inviting the Spirit into our lives. Sister Zupi also mentioned how grateful she was that our leaders are led by promptings from the Holy Ghost.

Having the right mindset and coming prepared will help us to hear the Holy Ghost at church.

The Word of Wisdom is one example of how revelation comes from the Holy Ghost. After Joseph and Emma Smith noticed tobacco was causing the chapel to be unclean, Joseph inquired of the Lord and received the revelation that became known as the Word of Wisdom.

Sister Zupi also focused on the end of President Packer’s talk where he spoke of members who may have become offended by something someone has said. She asked that we not take it personally and don’t let it ruin our outlook or experience with the Church and asked that we read the end of the conference talk, as we didn’t get to it during the lesson.
