Temple Work and Family History

A big thanks to Liz Thomey who has agreed to do these summaries of the Sunday lessons for us!

Lesson Summary for Sept 18, 2011

Chapter 40: Temple work and Family History, taught by Sister Wing.

Why are temples important? The ordinances of the temple are necessary in order for us to live eternally, as a family, with our Heavenly Father. It is where we do the work for the dead, but also for ourselves. It is where marriages and families are sealed for eternity. Children who are legally adopted can also be sealed to their adoptive families.

Temples link families to Christ.

Matthew 16:19 “…and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven..”

A story from Gospel Principles was read relating how Mario and Maria Cannamela, who were not members of the church, married in Tripani, Italy in 1882. Over a century later, their great-grandson and his wife went to the LA Temple. Serving as proxies, they knelt at the alter for the sealing of Mario and Maria and shared in their joy.

Several sisters shared experiences they had had at the temple.

Family history work is essential to temple work. It involves 3 basic steps:

  1. Identify your ancestors.

  2. Find out which ancestors need temple ordinances performed.

  3. Make certain that the ordinances are performed for them.

The Family History Center can help with this work. Also familysearch.org, new.familysearch.org, and ancestry.com are good websites to use.

It is not only important for us to do genealogy so that we may do temple work for our ancestors, but also so we can get to know them. A story was shared, in which a family got to know their ancestors better by drawing out family pedigree sheets, attaching photos and story cards to the names. The family became acquainted with several generations through this Family Home Evening project.
