Funerals and Fractures

First, Frances Jensen has passed away. Her funeral will be Saturday, Feb. 19th, at 10 am at the Stake Center on Magee.

Illness had made it difficult for her to attend church in the last few years, but I will always remember how impeccably dressed she was. She had a lovely sense of style. She also used to tell me she wished she could sing in the choir, as she loved music, but she just didn't have the breath for it anymore.

Second, Jo Fulkerson fell and broke her wrist this week.

And third, Nancy's son Joram (hope I spelled that right!) did NOT break his arm, just bruised it badly.

I got an email from Sis. Hileman on her mission about Sis. Frances Jensen. She wrote:

"Thanks for the update on Frances Jensen. She was a valiant spirit. She suffered for many years after tending her suffering husband for many years. Am sure she is happy to be reunited with him now. Funerals here last for at least 12 days with the open coffin in the living room and many persons sitting there for 24 hour days and a fire in the front yard so the smoke can safely guide the spirit heavenward. A canopy is set up outside (or the neighbors us a Bahai Cubo..bamboo and banana leaf hut
..you know, the kind you see on Pacific Island movies) where everyone plays cards for money and the money won goes to the family of the dead to help buy food. Some friends of ours here had a funeral for their Catholic 89 year old mother who was well known. They butchered 5 large pigs and countless chickens and ducks to feed the 600 persons who came for the feast on the day of the actual burial. However, during the 12 days they kept her in the livingroom, there were about 50 persons around all the time to be fed...dishes to be done, children to bathe, farm chores to do. It is quite an experience. Families live in family groups called barrios or barungay's so there is always much help and always much to do."
